The Federal Skilled Trade stream is a program that was introduced to fill Canada’s growing labor shortage in certain skilled trades by facilitating immigration through selection criteria that better reflect tradespersons’ particulars.
This program put more emphasis on applicants’ practical experience because many trades’ people could not meet the eligibility criteria under the Federal Skilled Worker program.

The basic eligibility requirements include:
- Proof of language proficiency CLB 5 in Listening and Speaking, and CLB 4 in Reading and Writing.
- Two years of full-time (or equivalent) work experience in a skilled trade within the last five years before the date of application.
- Meet all the job requirements for the skilled trade according to the NOC
- Have an LMIA – approved offer of full-time employment from up to two employers for at least one year
- Work experience does not need to be continuous and must be acquired after obtaining the corresponding qualifications to perform the job
- Some of the eligible groups are: 
*industrial, electrical and construction trade
*maintenance and equipment operations trade
*supervisor and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
*processing, manufacturing, and utilities supervisor and central control operators,
*chefs, cook, butcher and bakers
